Pseudoscientific article on vedic yagnas

Following article is being circulated on internet which claims scientific reasons for doing yagnas(a kind of fire rituals) . Below I have analysed it and showed why it false

ಯಜ್ಞದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹುತಿ ನೀಡುವುದೆಂದರೆ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದು ಅಥವಾ ವ್ಯಯ ಮಾಡುವುದಲ್ಲ, ಅವುಗಳ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವುದು!

ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಯಜ್ಞವೆಂದರೆ ತುಪ್ಪ, ಎಳ್ಳು, ಅಕ್ಕಿ ಮುಂತಾದವುಗಳನ್ನು ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಸುಡುವುದು ಎಂದೆನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲಿಯಾದರು ಯಜ್ಞಗಳಾದರೆ ‘ಸುಮ್ಮನೇ ಏಕೆ ಸುಡುತ್ತೀರಿ? ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಬಡವರಿಗೆ ನೀಡಿರಿ. ಅವರ ಆತ್ಮತೃಪ್ತವಾಗುವುದು’ ಎಂದು ಅನೇಕರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಆದರೆ ಯಜ್ಞವೆಂದರೆ ಸುಡುವುದಲ್ಲ, ಗಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಆಹುತಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಎಲ್ಲ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟುಗೂಡಿಸುವುದು ಎಂಬುದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೊಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೀಜವನ್ನು ಬಿತ್ತಿದ ನಂತರ ಸಸಿಯು ಹುಟ್ಟಿದಾಗ ಬೀಜದ ಶಕ್ತಿಯು ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ; ಆದರೆ ಯಜ್ಞದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಿದ ಆಹುತಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಬೀಜಗಳ ಸುಡುವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಶಕ್ತಿಯು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಆಯುರ್ವೇದದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುವ ತಾಮ್ರ, ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ, ಬಂಗಾರ, ವಜ್ರ ಇವುಗಳ ಭಸ್ಮದಿಂದ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಂಗಾರವನ್ನು ಕುದಿಸಿ ಸೇವಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದರ ಗುಣ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಬರಲು ಸಮಯ ತಗಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಬದಲು ಸ್ವರ್ಣಭಸ್ಮವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಲಾಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂದರೆ ಬಂಗಾರವನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಅದರ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮುಗಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಅದರ ಬದಲು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೇ ತತ್ತ್ವವು ಯಜ್ಞ ವಸ್ತುಗಳಿಗೂ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಯಜ್ಞದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹುತಿಯಾಗಿ ನೀಡಿದ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ಭಸ್ಮವನ್ನು ಹೊಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೊಬ್ಬರವೆಂದು ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ಬೆಳೆಯು ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಈಗ ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವತಃ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ಯಜ್ಞವೆಂದರೆ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದು ಅಥವಾ ವ್ಯಯ ಮಾಡುವುದಲ್ಲ, ಅವುಗಳ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವುದು ಎಂಬುದು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. - ದಿ.ಪಂ. ಧುಂಡೀರಾಜಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿ ದಾತೆ (ಸೌಜನ್ಯ-ದಾತೇ ಪಂಚಾಂಗಕರ್ತ)

(ಅನೇಕ ಕಾರಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಒಂದು ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಸ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಯಜ್ಞದಿಂದ ಇದೇ ರೀತಿ ಅನೇಕ ಪಟ್ಟು ಲಾಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕಲುಷಿತವಾಗಿರುವ ಕಲಿಯುಗದ ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗಲು ಸಹಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗುವುದರಿಂದ ಮಾನವನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಕೂಡ ಶಾಂತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇಡೀ ಮನುಕುಲಕ್ಕೆ ಅದರ ಶಾರೀರಿಕ, ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಲಾಭಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.)

“ಯಜ್ಞದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹುತಿ ನೀಡುವುದೆಂದರೆ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದು ಅಥವಾ ವ್ಯಯ ಮಾಡುವುದಲ್ಲ, ಅವುಗಳ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವುದು!”Here in what sense the word “ಶಕ್ತಿ” is used ?? If you meant “energy”  (as used in science ) this line is totally wrong. “ಅವುಗಳ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವುದು “ You cannot increase the totally energy of any system. Totally energy of the universe is always constant (First law of thermodynamics ) . You can only convert one form of energy into other but which also as certain limitations (2 law of thermodynamics ). ““ಯಜ್ಞದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹುತಿ ನೀಡುವುದೆಂದರೆ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದು ಅಥವಾ ವ್ಯಯ ಮಾಡುವುದಲ್ಲ” But when doing yagna the material undergoes chemical change due to the high temperature (due to fire in the altar “agni”) which result in the releasing of heat into environment and material turns into ash(basma). Also in the yagna due to incomplete burning lot  of smoke (particulate matter)is released to the environment. There is no study that gives evidence that doing yagna results in beneficial  effects. “ಬಂಗಾರವನ್ನು ಕುದಿಸಿ ಸೇವಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದರ ಗುಣ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಬರಲು ಸಮಯ ತಗಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಬದಲು ಸ್ವರ್ಣಭಸ್ಮವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಲಾಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂದರೆ ಬಂಗಾರವನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಅದರ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮುಗಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಅದರ ಬದಲು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತದೆ”

It shows the total ignorance about how swarna basma is prepared. Swarna basma is not prepared by burning gold . The difference between it and ordinary gold is the size of the gold particle it has been found that swarns basma contain nano-sized particles (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3157103/) .

“ಅಂದರೆ ಬಂಗಾರವನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಅದರ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮುಗಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಅದರ ಬದಲು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತದೆ” as explained swarna basma is not formed by burning gold at all. There is no “gold ash” “copper ash”. Ash in nothing but carbon. If you burn gold you don’t get ash its temperature increases and  it will undergo phase change into liquid form and than to vapour form. (ofcourse it depends on temperature and pressure of the system) .

“. ಇದೇ ತತ್ತ್ವವು ಯಜ್ಞ ವಸ್ತುಗಳಿಗೂ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ” no as explained above in yagna material is burned a combustion process takes place .
“ಯಜ್ಞದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹುತಿಯಾಗಿ ನೀಡಿದ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ಭಸ್ಮವನ್ನು ಹೊಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೊಬ್ಬರವೆಂದು ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ಬೆಳೆಯು ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಈಗ ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವತಃ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ” Ash is always used  as fertiliser for plants . But what is the difference between burning material in the backyard(say for heating water)  and using that ash and the ash generated by the yagna . If they are same then all than” yagna is just glorified form of burning” ?? what is the requirement for priests than ?? vedic chanting and gods ?? The best part of this post is if it is true then for all practical purposes  “yagna will be nothing butglorified form of  preparing ash” .

“ಅನೇಕ ಕಾರಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಒಂದು ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಸ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಯಜ್ಞದಿಂದ ಇದೇ ರೀತಿ ಅನೇಕ ಪಟ್ಟು ಲಾಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕಲುಷಿತವಾಗಿರುವ ಕಲಿಯುಗದ ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗಲು ಸಹಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗುವುದರಿಂದ ಮಾನವನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಕೂಡ ಶಾಂತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇಡೀ ಮನುಕುಲಕ್ಕೆ ಅದರ ಶಾರೀರಿಕ, ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಲಾಭಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ”

These are just stated beliefs there is no evidence is presented. “ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕಲುಷಿತವಾಗಿರುವ ಕಲಿಯುಗದ ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗಲು ಸಹಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗುವುದರಿಂದ” . This shows total ignorance or disregard for atmospheric pollution. “ಕಲಿಯುಗದ” is just a hindu theological concept a mythology. Earth is 4.5 billion years old and universe is 13.7. “ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗುವುದರಿಂದ”  Atmosphere consists of physical entities like various gases there is no meaning in saying “ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕವಾಗುವುದರಿಂದ” because gunas like sathwa, rajas, tamas are philosophical concepts in certain Indian philosophical schools there is no evidence for its existence.
